DJ Jazzy Jeff’s present is as bright as his past is celebrated. Awarded the first rap Grammy in 1989 as one half of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, founder of the A Touch Of Jazz studios and producer for everyone from Eminem to Michael Jackson, in 2007 the iconic Philadelphian is known as the world’s premier hip-hop party DJ adds another string to his bow with the release of his anticipated second producer album
The Return Of The Magnificent.
The follow up to 2002’s celebrated The Magnificent, this new set is sixteen-tracks of classic hip-hop and solid soul, the vocalists a mix of new talent, indie hip-hop mainstays and certified rap legends. ‘Let Me Hear U Clap’ features guest emcee Posdnous of De La Soul; the J-Live assisted ‘Practice’ breaths new life into a well known loop. Jean Grae stars on the eponymous ‘Supa Jean’ whilst Wu-Tang engine room Method Man steps in on the jarring ‘Hold It Down’; Chicago microphonist Rhymefest joins the DJ for the scratch-laden ‘Jeff N Fess’ and fellow Windy City newcomer Twone Gabz graces the intro, track‘Hip-Hop’, and ‘Go See The Doctor 2K7’.
Elsewhere, revered Golden Era phenomenon Big Daddy Kane appears on ‘The Garden’, respected nineties luminary CL Smooth adds to the triumphant ‘All I Know’ and dancehall-slanted Canadian sensation Kardinal Offishall embellishes the uptempo ‘She Was So Flyy’. Female singer/songwriter ChinahBlac and accomplished DC vocalist Raheem DeVaughn smooth it out on ‘Touch Me Witt Ur Handz’ and ‘My Soul Ain’t For Sale’ respectively, and Rocafella roughneck Peedi Peedi closes it out with spirited ‘Brand New Funk 2k7’.
Diverse, soul-felt, edgy and warm, The Return Of The Magnificent is everything flavour-of-the-month rap music isn’t in 2007. Easily as substantial as its prequel, it reminds us Jeff is as capable a producer as he is a DJ, equally proficient in playing other people’s records as he is making his own. Tracklist:
